The Engineering Process

The Engineering Process

An engineering process is an order of operations that engineers commonly follow to solve issues. It is highly iterative and certain steps may be repeated several times in the course of a single project. The steps that are iterated may be framed and articulated differently.

The first step is research. This includes locating data that can be used to identify needs and the limitations. It is an essential component of the engineering design process, as it allows engineers to discover the most effective solution for any given issue.

Once researchers have collected enough data, they can begin brainstorming solutions to the problem. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, and is the stage where engineering creativity really flourishes. This is also a stage where potential solutions are analyzed and evaluated. This could include modeling studies, generating decision matrixes or even building prototypes for comparison.

This step involves students selecting one of their top ideas, and developing plans for the creation. They then build the prototype using the required materials and test it against their own performance criteria. Students may need to test and revise their prototype to ensure that it performs according to the specifications.

This is a great way to demonstrate the importance of problem-solving and iteration. It is very common for engineers to find an idea, test it and then find a new problem that they need to address. The process is repeated until the engineer comes up with the solution that is satisfactory to their expectations.
